BUYING A SPINONE PUPPY

You have chosen to own an Italian Spinone; we hope you and your new dog will give each other many years of pleasure. This leaflet outlines a few basic rules, guidelines and training tips to help you get the very best from your puppy. Before you chose to own an Italian Spinone hopefully you will have researched the breed. The breed was “created” in Italy as a single hunting dog. Its purpose is to hunt the ground, which can be extremely varying terrain. When it locates the game, it will go on a solid point, on instruction it will then flushes the game. Hopefully this will be shot and this will then be retrieved to the hunter. As breeders we have aimed to continue this characteristic of the spinone, but confirming the Kennel Club breed standard for the construction of the dog.

Owning a Spinone

"Un cane per me, per voi, non per tutti" - A dog for you, for me, not for everyone

-Francesco Saverio Gianotti

Please remember why you have decided to welcome an Italian Spinone into your life. They were created in Italy to do a combined working activity. They are capable of hunting quarry using mainly their excellent sense of smell (remember this can be your pet rabbit/ butterflies in your garden), pointing that quarry (a static stance that is telling you that something is there) and finally a retrieve once that quarry has been shot. These activities should indicate to you that this dog has intelligence. We do not only sell our puppies to working homes but we do discuss this element of the breed with all our puppy owners. If you do not train your dog with basic requirements, you may find your dog becomes bored and destructive and you may have difficulty recalling them on a walk as they are too interested in the hunting side of the walk. Please persevere as this will pay off in the long run. We are always happy to discuss any matter with you, no matter how small or trivial you may think we would rather help you with advice, rather than you suffer or affect your relationship with our beloved breed. We are not qualified experts but we do have a lot of experience and would be grateful to receive a phone call to discuss a problem and to try and advise you on what we would do in a similar situation but we would always refer you to the expertise of your vet and we should be used to aid your research on you and your Spinone’s problem.
