Our Story

We welcomed our first Spinone in 1996 - Cobbetts Luna di Argento at Sanjika “Taz” who’s pedigree contained Italian bloodlines, and this is where the history of Sanjika Spinoni begins.

Just after Taz joined the family, a group of Working Spinone enthusiasts – Jonathon and Liz Shaw (Sentling), Alix Johnson, Val Woodward (Connomar), Ray and Anita Davies (Freshetin) and Rod Johnson grouped together and engaged in monthly training sessions in Lincolnshire under the renowned HPR trainer Trevor Rigby. This resulted in Stuart achieving a Field Trial award when Taz was only 18 months old and around the same time, the arrival of our next Spinone and the foundation bitch for all Sanjika Spinoni - Connomar Mauria (Skye). The training group at Trevor’s proved to be so successful a B team was formed which Sally attended with Skye and formed great friendships with fellow members Jon Roe, Chris and Pete Guest, Paul and Julie Carnell and Paula. The two teams would join for fun shooting weekends in around the country and cemented the enthusiasm for the working Spinone. Their enjoyment led to trips to Italy to watch the breed being worked and shown in their country of origin.

Unfortunately, when the time came to have a litter from Taz, the knowledge of Cerebellar Ataxia became well known throughout the breed. Sadly, her maternal Grandmother was known to be a carrier of CA so the decision was made not to breed from her. However, having proved to be such a good working dog, her Sire was mated to Skye and the first Sanjika litter was born on the 1st February 2000.

All dogs have all followed the required health testing for Cerebellar Ataxia, hip scoring and abided by the Italian Spinone Club of Great Britain code of ethics.

Our family’s passion for the Spinone has led to Sally and daughter Robyn becoming approved to award Challenge Certificates in the breed and they both actively show the breed both in the UK and Italy. Stuart and Sally have held officer positions for the ISCGB and have supported the breed club in all areas from health to field trials, from Championship Shows to "Fundays".

Stuart and Sally’s decision to import a dog from Italy founded our friendship with Ezio Pagliarini of del Subasio. Cesare del Subasio was imported to the UK in 2001 and spent time in quarantine at the Shaw’s. More about this journey can be read on our With thanks to page.

Stuart's interest was always the working side and having travelled to Italy a couple of times without dogs, the opportunity then arose, with the introduction of the Pet Passport scheme, to compete with our homebred dogs in 2004. Stuart and Robyn, Storm and Sorrel had a very successful trip and it ran smoothly, so regular trips ensued resulting in Sanjika Kokola winning the Trofeo Massimino in 2017. See our Gallery for more information.

The Italian Club (CISp) operate a Triennial show, a combined weekend of showing, trialling and education. The kennel has been represented at every show since 2005, being successful in both the shows and working trials. The kennel has been very fortunate to use some influential Italian dogs at stud which have truly enhanced the kennels bloodlines and those in the UK.
